Assisi is a characteristic town of Umbria located about 26 km from the city of Perugia located in the hills and famous throughout the world for the presence of the mortal remains of San Francesco guarded since 1230 in the homonymous Basilica of San Francesco by order of Pope Gregory IX .
In 2000, together with other Franciscan sites in the area, the Basilica was included by UNESCO in the list of the heritage of humanity.
